Why use Summ It Up Accountancy

I set out to offer a personalised bookkeeping and accountancy service for small businesses, and with just a handful of clients, Summ-It Up was started in 2009. 

No person is the same so I decided to apply that theory to businesses; what accounting needs one business has are not necessarily the same as its neighbour. 

So that’s what I did, and still do to this day. In 2009 I founded Summ-It Up, focusing on visiting clients on-site to produce that hassle-free service we all want. 

As well as working in an accountancy firm, my background has covered a variety of industries including dealing with Sales Invoices for a large car transportation company, purchases for an alcohol wholesaler and then progressing to managing the project team, coordinating the reporting on all the returns and ullage, and supervising the implementation of a new software system. Helping to sort problems and backlogs is a passion of mine.”

Next up we are going to look at shortcuts in Xero - quick and easy steps to save time when working in Xero.

The first being keyboard shortcuts to navigate your way around Xero.

All of these shortcuts are within the Search Function (The Magnifying Glass in the top right of your screen).

First to open the Search function press / (forward slash) and then one of the following to shortcut to the screen you want to access:

a All bank accounts
b All bills
c All contacts
d Dashboard
i All invoices
p All purchase orders
q All quotes
r All reports

Select the screen name when it appears or click on add new and loads of clicks saved!

What can you claim when working from home?

A lot of us work from home, but when it comes to what costs you can claim it can be a bit confusing as to what you can claim and what you cant.

So there are a few ways to works this out. The first and the most simple being to use the HMRC Simplified Expenses for the hours worked per month. Currently these are:

Hours Per Month - Flat Rate per month
25 to 50 Hours - £10
51 to 100 Hours - £18
101 and more - £26

So if you work 35 hours a week for 10 months and 60 hours a week for 2 months, you would claim £136 for Use of Home (10 months at £10 =£100 + 2 months at £18 = £36)

But is this the best way or would you be better off by working out your actual costs?

To base your claims on actual costs you need to find a 'reasonable method' or dividing up your costs - one way is the number of rooms, if you use a whole room(s) for your business. For example if you have 5 rooms in your home and use 1 as your office and for nothing else then you can claim 20% of your costs, or 1/5 (So on an electricity bill of £500 you would claim £100.

What costs can you claim a proportion when basing on actual costs?

Electricity & Gas
Council Tax
Mortgage Interest or Rent
Internet and Telephone Use
